Blog: Should You Remove Your Downspout Extensions During Winter

by Seamless Solutions LLC

With winter here, it's the perfect time to prepare your gutters for the cold Minnesota weather. According to Adam Duxter at CBS News Minnesota, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) weather forecast "paints a grim and potentially colder" winter for our state. Since prolonged below-freezing temperatures are possible, many metro homeowners wonder about removing the downspout extensions on their gutters for the coming winter months.

Here's why removing your downspout extensions is an excellent idea to help prevent problems with your system.

Snow-Covered Downspout Extensions

Since all or a portion of the downspout extensions run along the ground, snow can pile up at the end of the extension and impede the water flow. A few inches of heavy snow will completely smother and bury the extension, blocking any warmth of sunlight and increasing the possibility of freezing water and ice formation inside.

Frozen Downspout Extensions

If the downspout extensions are frozen, ice buildup could prevent water from draining out of the gutters properly. Trapped water will back up again through the entire system. Clogged gutters can't do their job of draining water away from your home, resulting in pooling inside the gutter sections. Stagnant water that collects and remains in the system may cause leaks, water damage, and extra weight and strain on the gutters, eventually making sections sag and detach from the roof or fascia board.

Heated Cables for Downspout Extensions

Some homeowners choose to run self-regulating heat cables through their downspout extensions to prevent freezing. While heat cables can be a suitable option, they may not be the easiest solution for everyone. Sometimes it's much simpler to remove the gutter extensions before the winter season to avoid potential problems. Then, once the threat of ice and snow is over, it will be safe to attach them again as the warmer weather returns in the spring.

Cleaned and Prepped Gutters Are a Must

Before disconnecting your downspout extensions, be sure to clean out your gutters thoroughly. Remove all debris, such as twigs, leaves, needles, and other solid materials that could cause water clogs and increase the chances of ice formation. Doing so will help prevent any loss of drainage. In addition, the time spent will go a long way toward ensuring your system is prepped and ready to handle the cold winter weather.
